Some mornings, the mom found at the breakfast table isn't the mom we mean to be.
This intruder mom greets with a grumble instead of a smile. And an accusation instead of a hug.
The room falls completely silent. Leaving them wondering where she's gone. That warm, caring mama. The roll with the punches and laugh at the antics mama.
The mama wonders too. Where have I gone? Will the true Mama please stand up?
We tell ourselves she's gone. That we're worthless screw-ups.
Our families deserve more, we think. More than we're giving right now, and it feels hopeless.

I have a sinking suspicion that I'm not alone in this. So today I'm going to pray. I'm going to pray for you and me. Because it is hopeless without Him.
Will you pray along with me? Colossians 3:12 will serve as our framework:
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
We are amazed to be called your chosen people. You didn't have to love us like you do. But you choose to do so, and we're humbled and thankful. You say we are holy, but most days, we feel so far from it. We feel spent, grumpy, scattered, and not cut out for our days.
Today we pray that you will dress us in the garment of compassion. Turn our hearts toward our families. Seeing them through the eyes of love, forgiveness, and grace. Even when we gain nothing in return. Help us be compassionate.
We want to be kind, we really do. Father, we ask for your kindness. Because we aren't so good at this on our own. Give us a smile on our faces, and more importantly, a smile on our hearts.
Help us be humble. As you are humble. We don't want to seek our own agenda, we want to be filled by you so we can in turn extend ourselves for our children. Please empty us of self-centeredness, and fill us with an other-centered mindset.
May our words be gentle. Calm. Confident. May our children first and foremost recognize love in our words and actions.
And Father, you know we lack patience. We struggle with waiting and messes. And some days, we wish we could skip through the years, when life is "easier." But we know better. Help us see our days and interruptions as one more chance to need you. Oh, we need you. May our life ooze with grace at every turn.
We thank you for life, for arms wrapped around us. It is in the Name of Jesus, we pray.
